Yoga The best known aspect of yoga is the yoga postures (asanas) and are the focus of a regular class. These postures are designed to bring health to the body - strength, stamina, suppleness and good posture - as well as calm the mind and stabilise the emotions. They improve concentration and enhance relaxation. The postures can help one deal with the stresses of day-to-day life as well as prepare the way for other aspects of yoga such as breath control (pranayama) and meditation (dhyana). Yoga is a discipline that has many aspects. Ultimately it is an ancient philosophy and system of personal development that addresses the fundamental questions of consciousness and life itself. To find out more about yoga and yoga philosophy please visit the links page where one can access other sites that go into more detail.
Iyengar Yoga was developed by B.K.S. Iyengar (pictured right), who still practises today at the age of 92 and is one of the world's leading authorities on the subject of yoga. Emphasis is initially placed on the practice of the postures, focusing on precision, detail and alignment in order to receive their maximum benefit. Breath control is taught once the practitioner is well established in the practice of these postures. Where the certification mark (the logo on the right) is displayed, one can be assured that the teacher has received rigorous training and assessment in the Iyengar method and that the teaching will be of a high standard with an emphasis on safety. Please visit the Iyengar Yoga Association (UK) to verify my certification level. |
